Adelaide house prodigy Sonny Fodera has received a farewell present like no other before he heads overseas. His track Everybody Get On The Decks will be included on The Juan MacLean’s upcoming mix for !K7’s revered series DJ Kicks! Onion speaks to the house producer and DJ before he heads to the US and Europe for many gigs scattered across the northern hemisphere.

When did you find out that The Juan MacLean had included Everybody Get On The Decks on his DJ Kicks mix?
Mes from Guesthouse Music mentioned something about a compilation; I had no idea it was for DJ Kicks! I found out through Aaronak (local DJ) on Facebook.

The DJ Kicks series is one of the most acclaimed DJ mix series’ going around, so getting a track on one of these mixes must be pretty exciting for you?
Very, very exciting times. I can’t wait until it gets released...

Over the last six months to a year I feel you’ve really stepped up as a solo producer with respect to locking in some really tight grooves that can crossover into different house sub-genres. Do you agree?
For sure! I think I have been experimenting with a whole lot of different sounds of house music from disco to soulful to the more driving techy stuff. I don’t want to be locked into one genre. It’s just boring and production gets stale.

You’ve had so many new tracks out over the last year that it’s hard keeping track of them. But what has been some highlight releases for you lately?
Definitely the releases on Drop Music and Guesthouse. I have wanted to get on those labels for quite some time and last year it all happened. They gave me maximum exposure and support.

Tell us about the overseas jaunt. Is this just a six-month thing with some sweet gigs locked in across the globe or is it a bit more than that?
I am touring the states for three weeks, doing WMC in Miami and some gigs in California and one show in Toronto, Canada. Then off to Europe where I have two months worth of gigs booked in the UK, Belgium and France. I am definitely sticking around for summer. I haven't actually been overseas yet and would love to actually give it a crack over there.

Adelaide and Australia are obviously far away from the rest of the world. So is a permanent or a semi permanent move overseas something you’re looking at?
Yeah for sure. I am now officially a British Citizen, so I think I should take advantage of that. I have been looking at places in a few cities/towns such as Barcelona, Ibiza, London, Paris, Lille and even Berlin, but I guess I wont know until I get there. But Australia is awesome - the weather, the regions. With the internet you can base yourself anywhere in the world and produce music. I just want to get up amongst the action and the best in the world.




Will The Subjekts continue? Or will it end due to this trip?
We have been talking about bringing The Subjekts over to Europe for a while. I think Jorge (Watts) is just working some stuff out here; he will be over very, very shortly.

What’s coming up for you release-wise we should all know about?
I just did an EP for Miguel Migs for Salted Music, which should be out in the next two months. I also just finished a track for Nervous Records, which will be dropping just before WMC!
