Does it offend you yeah? Talk new album

Ahead their live dates as part of the Future Music Festival, we caught up with Dan Coop from Does It Offend You Yeah? to discuss their highly anticipated second album.

Their debut record, the oddly titled You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into, divided music lovers around the world. Straddling that line between punk and electro, Does It Offend You, Yeah? managed to carve out a niche audience all their own. For album number two, Coop says the music will be less “schizophrenic” as the band hone their sound.

You’ve been working on your second album for quite some time. What’s the latest?

"It’s just finished today (Fri Feb 5) to be honest. James (Rushent, vocals) has spent the last three and a bit weeks re-recording vocals and doing additional production work on his own and I just got a message saying that it’s all done now. So hopefully it’ll be sent off for mastering in the next few days."

When can fans expect to hear something new from it?

"I dunno, that’s down to the record label to be honest. I’d love to put in all on the internet tomorrow and let everyone hear it but I don’t think the record label would like that. So I think everyone’s got to wait or come and see us live to get a good indication of where we’re going with it."

It’s been a while since we last heard anything new from you guys. Has the long time between writing meant there’ll much of sound shift between the two records?

"What we’ve tried to do with this album is make it a lot less schizophrenic. First album, you couldn’t really tell it was all one band because some of it was dance tracks, some of it was band tracks. This album what we’ve tried to do is make it a lot more coherent, have sort of like an electronic theme running through the whole album to make it sound like one band playing rather than a production tune on one track then a whole band on the other."

Would you say then that your electronic and dance influences have won out over the rockier side to the band?

"Nah, I’d say it’s an amalgamation of the two but it’s done down the middle instead of going to extremes on each one, if you know what I mean. It’s kind of like the extremes of the last album’s fused into a more refined sound. From playing live that’s how we’ve managed to decide on what direction we’ve wanted to go to."
