Name: Marty B
Style: Nu-skool breaks
If you weren’t DJing how would you spend your nights? I spend most of my time either working as I run my own business, playing sport or doing something related to music whether it's learning production, listening to new beats or networking with other DJs and producers around the globe. All up I’m pretty busy so sleep is also something I try and get a lot of at night.
Most memorable DJing experience? Would have to be a recent gig I played at Halo nightclub, Hobart. I got to warm up for the Stanton Warriors and the place was rammed front to back for my whole set. The crowd were really educated and knew the tunes I was playing then I dropped Rocket Soul by the Plump DJs and I’ve never seen a floor erupt like it did, people literally climbing over one another to get a groove on, epic fun!
Best DJ set you’ve ever experienced as a punter? Definitely the Chemical Brothers live at the 2000 BDO for the big guns, as that set was and still is the most amazing musical experience of my life. Other than that Afghan Headspin (Wrisk and Mackie from Resonant Evil now making breaks) at Breakspoll @ Fabric in London 2009 room three at 3am! Utter and complete madness!
Which other Adelaide DJs and acts do you dig? There are loads… Brendon was my inspiration and I still love his sets. I love DJ Batch who co-hosts with me at Fresh and rinses out the D&B, the Track Team boys and the old guard in breaks; Spark and Dirty Harry were always amazing! Some of the newer guys I DJ with at Mojo's like Risk and Cold One are wikid. Then there are guys like Reload, Dan Metalman and all the Fresh FM DJs that rock it out on the regular!
What do you love about the Adelaide nightlife and music scene? The nightlife here is great and I’ve always admired the go hard or go home attitude of the punters. From a behind the decks perspective I love watching everyone have fun. That said Adelaide used to be more adventurous with its musical stylings always hungry for more and new beats and pieces. I think this should be part of Adelaide’s dance music culture today.
Where can we catch you play? My studio on Thursday nights for The Down Under Breaks, which is broadcast online at www.nuskoolbreaks.co.uk. Fresh FM on Sunday nights from 10 til 12 for Beyond The Breaks. I also play Saturday nights at Mojo West and random gigs about town.
Describe your mix? I tried to go on a bit of a journey with this mix starting off with some mid tempo funky breaks ala Nick Thayer, Mooqee, A-Skillz etc then making my way up through the BPM range to some nice Psy Breaks from LuQas, Hedflux, Rex and then smashing out some faster beats near the end, the last tune Cocaine by Afghan Headpsin always raises a few eyebrows.
