DEF STARR

Local trio Def Starr provide Onion with a sweet brand spanking new DJ mix of nu-disco goodness with their fab the Lucky Starr Mixtape. The production trio and DJ duo who had a blog smash with their remix of Phoenix’s Fences are bringing LA faves Classixx to Limbo on Thu Feb 11 and Onion will feature both acts in the issue dropping on Thu Jan 28. But before all that you can read the rest of the Def Starr interview here while enjoying their mix available as a download below!

Can you provide some background to Def Starr. When and how did you form and what was the original intention for the group?

We actually met at Electric Circus in early 2008 on the night Alexander Technique from New York was playing. We soon realised we were very much on the same page when it came to which producers and record labels we were into. We formed a DJ duo shortly after under the name Touché but were forced to change the name when we realised we kept getting confused for DJ Touché (Fake Blood) on the blogs. Not that it bothered us, he's definitely a good producer to get confused with but it was becoming too much of a hassle.

You have an EP coming out in the early part of this year. Can you tell us a bit about the sounds on that and who it will be released through?

There are quite a few different sounds going into the EP with some original vocal tunes as well as some more club worthy stuff. The original idea was to release it through a bunch of our favourite blogs, but as we get closer to finishing we've become more inclined to get it in the hands of the right Aussie labels and see what happens.

Locally and internationally, who are the producers you guys are really feeling right now?

There are so many Australian producers absolutely killing it at the moment, our favourite young guns would have to be Shazam, Cassian and GLOVES who just seem to make gold out of everything. We really look up to The Swiss and Flight Facilities in terms of being so different and doing it so damn well! Internationally Classixx are probably the producers we base ourselves on the most, so much respect for them, Aeroplane and Holy Ghost! Favourite tune at the moment Breakbot - Make You Mine. Amazing! Get on it.

The 8 Bit Kidz collective and the young producers and DJs at Electric Circus seem like a pretty tight group from an outsider’s point of view. Is this a group where creative ideas on productions and remixes get thrown back and forth within the collective?

It's more of a family then a tight group. We all get along so well and share the same taste in so many things aside from music. In terms of production we are all pretty much going in different directions but we did a collab with Loot & Plunder a little while ago on a tune called Slapstick which could be a sign of things to come.

Apart from the EP and the remixes, what else is coming up for Def Starr in the early part of 2010?

We've got our festival live show at Big Day Out, which is pretty exciting! We're also having our first Def Starr & Friends party where we're bringing Classixx (LA/Kitsune) & Swick to Limbo for a night of what we would call "amazing music". Cheeky little plug.
