SPIT SYNDICATE
EXILE (OBESE)
REVIEWED 16.06.10
The Scope: Second album from the crew pre-emptively dubbed the future.
I came into this release with somewhat low expectations, while I had liked their initial mixtape work and parts of the duo’s debut it has not stood up well in time. Thankfully the duo of Nick Lupi and Jimmy Nice have taken on board all the feedback and released a significantly better second album. Too often the debut was mired in average hooks and strained mannerisms, on Exile this is left behind and the results speak for themselves. The close association with fast rising stars Horrorshow has done wonders here, Adit laying down a continued stream of brilliant beats and Solo offering his guest vocals where required. It seems working around talented artists has driven the Sydney duo further, both Nick and Jimmy have so much more to offer this time around. There is some lyrical depth here, The Creditors and End Game showing the most impressive evolution, whilst Kings Only gave me new respect on the duo’s history and who they credit as influences in the Australian scene, the names I must say are a pleasant surprise. While the album still has some weaker moments (and maybe one hook it could do without) this is a big improvement.
The Wrap: More movement in the right direction, this is career Viagra that would make Hef happy.
