Elliot Ness has been keeping deep and Chicago house alive in Adelaide as a DJ and as a promoter through the Monkey Tennis parties among others. The co-host of Fresh 92.7’s The Quintessential Mix lays down a fresh mix of local (Sonny Fodera, Alexander Holland, Funky Chicken and Will Jax) and international house heat with his mix for Onion.
Name: Elliot Ness
Style: Deep/Chicago/tech house
If you weren’t DJing how would you spend your nights? Most likely I would be training Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan – Korean martial arts, listening to tunes with a glass of vino and spending quality time with my girl.
Most memorable DJing experience? Probably handlin’ biz at Monkey Tennis in Sydney, or NYE 2009/10 at Geisha Bar in Perth – the sound was awesome and the punters were totally up for it!
Best DJ set you’ve ever experienced as a punter? There’s a few! Locally, probably Chuck Love at EC years ago – or James Zabiela at Minke was still one of the stand outs for me.
Which other Adelaide DJs and acts do you dig? The obvious would be Sonny Fodera and Watto (Jorge Watts) – consistently dropping heat, which is world-class! Also the likes of the mainstays in HMC, Universal Dust and props to Will Jax for his latest effort What Makes Jazz and Alexander Holland for his remix of Bobby Dabic’s track Despina (both on my mixtape)
What do you love about the Adelaide nightlife and music scene? I have respect for the older cats that stayed real and held it down in Adelaide for so long. Despite most venues being dominated by similar punters, themes and music in recent years there are still venues in this city where you can catch a groove; these are the places I love the most.
Where can we catch you play? You can catch me right now at Savvy Bar Fridays, Apple Bar on Saturdays and Le Soir on Thursdays. I also co-host The Quintessential Mix on Fresh FM 92.7 which is also simulcast on Soundpond.net (Fridays 8-10pm)
Describe your mix? I play mixture of old and new – I’m proud to be one of the few cats left in Adelaide still buying and dropping wax. My sound is generally pretty organic – blending the deeper facets of funk and soul, more up-tempo bumpin’ Chicago sounds and of late am really digging tunes on the deeper/techier sometimes even tribal tip.
